FINAL NOTICE: EXPORT YOUR CONTENT OUT OF SAKAI BY MAY 14


This is the final reminder. There are no exceptions to this timeline.

Instructors and site owners have until May 14 to export any wanted content out of their Sakai sites. May 14 is the final day you can access and retrieve your content opens in new window. Course content from all 2022, 2023, and SP24 Sakai registrar courses has already been migrated to Canvas opens in new window.

On May 15, 2026, Sakai will be taken permanently offline to be decommissioned.

Sakai has been available in restricted access for two years after the University moved to Canvas opens in new window to allow site owners to review and retrieve their content. Please do a final review of your Sakai sites and export any needed content now.

Sakai Decommission: May 15, 2026

Site owners must extract any wanted Sakai content by May 14, 2026.

Sakai entered restricted access on May 15, 2024, when all sites became permanently unpublished and restricted to site owners. Site owners have two years to extract any wanted content as Sakai will be decommissioned and permanently unavailable starting May 15, 2026. Canvas opens in new window is now the only centrally-supported active Learning Management System.


During restricted access:

  • All courses, projects, and University-related work must be conducted outside of Sakai. No new sites created.
  • All Sakai sites permanently unpublished. Student, Participant, Auditor, Guest roles do not have access to sites.
  • Instructor, Organizer, Teaching Assistant, Coordinator, Tech Support roles still have access to their sites to allow for content review and retrieval opens in new window for 2 years until Sakai is decommissioned on May 15, 2026.
  • Tools hidden from student view will not be visible to site owners. Submit a help request opens in new window with any questions or issues.
  • All email functions disabled.
  • Password resets for Sakai non-Onyen Guest accounts not permitted due to disabled email functions.

 

Sakai Processes

  • Accessibility opens in new window
  • HIPAA opens in new window: Protected Health Information (PHI) in Sakai is not permitted.
  • FERPA opens in new window: Sakai Assignments, Drop Box, Gradebook, PostEm, and Tests & Quizzes are designed to share FERPA-protected information privately between instructors and individual students.
  • Honor Code opens in new window: Students must adhere to the Honor Code at all times. Consult your instructor or the Office of Student Conduct opens in new window if you have questions.

 

Canvas Transition Timeline

  • Spring 2024: Last term for Sakai use.
  • May 15, 2024: Sakai entered restricted access. All courses and projects must be in Canvas.
  • June 30, 2025: Sakai restricted to Eduroam and VPN access.
  • May 15, 2026: Sakai decommissioned and permanently unavailable.

Course Migrations Available

  • Course content has been migrated from Sakai to Canvas for all 2022, 2023, and SP24 registrar courses.
  • Look for "SAKAI_Archive" sites in Canvas to copy into official course sites.
  • Migrated content does not include student work or grades due to FERPA.

Sakai Maintenance

Regular maintenance of the Sakai system will occur on the third Thursday of each month and as needed. Notices will be posted within Sakai.
