Sakai Tools and Features

The Sakai community has identified a set of “core” capabilities that are adopted by virtually all institutions using Sakai. The core tools in the Sakai 20 release are listed below. In addition, there is a large number of add-on tools, called “contrib” tools developed by the community, from external vendors, or resources from campus departments and in use by UNC.

External Tool (LTI) opens in new window: Integrate external tools that support the IMS Basic Learning Tools Interoperability standard in your sites

Forums opens in new window: Create, moderate, and manage discussion topics and groups within a course and send private messages to site participants

Gradebook opens in new window: Calculate, store, and distribute grade information to students

Home Site opens in new window: Your individual workspace displays our Message of the Day, campus resources, and your course notifications

Lessons opens in new window: Create content modules and sequences; can be organized by week, unit, or topic; add student checklists

Messages opens in new window: For contacting course members through internal messages and email

News opens in new window: Display custom news content from dynamic, online sources via rss

Overview opens in new window: For providing an overview of your site, description, recent announcements and events

Permissions & Roles opens in new window: Permissions allow users to access certain features in sites depending on their roles

Podcasts opens in new window: For managing individual podcast and feed information

PostEm opens in new window: For distributing individual feedback via a .csv and confirming when each person has accessed it

Profile opens in new window: Create a profile and connect with others in a social networking model

Resources opens in new window: Post, store, and organize material related to the site

Rich Text Editor opens in new window: A WYSIWYG editor to modify and format your text

Roster opens in new window: View a list of site participants and their group membership

Rubrics opens in new window: For creating and managing grading rubrics for use in the Gradebook and in individual assessment tools

Search opens in new window: For searching site content

Section Info opens in new window: For managing sections within a site

Sign-up opens in new window: Enables signup for meetings, office hours, and other events

Site Info opens in new window: For managing your site, adding/removing tools and site members

Statistics opens in new window: View site usage statistics on user visits, tool activity, resource activity

Syllabus opens in new window: Post a summary outline of course requirements

Tests & Quizzes opens in new window: Create and manage online assessments

Web Content opens in new window: Display external web pages and link to content in Resources

Wiki opens in new window: Create and edit web content collaboratively
