Sakai Tools and Features

The Sakai community has identified a set of “core” capabilities that are adopted by virtually all institutions using Sakai. The core tools in the Sakai 20 release are listed below. In addition, there is a large number of add-on tools, called “contrib” tools developed by the community, from external vendors, or resources from campus departments and in use by UNC.

Announcements : Post current, time-critical information to a site

Assignments : Create and grade online or offline assignments

Bullhorns : Alert notifications of recent updates

Calendar : Maintain deadlines, activities, and site-related events

Chat : Engage in real-time conversations with site participants

Drop Box : Share files privately with site participants

Email Archive : Access an archive of email sent to participants

External Tool (LTI) : Integrate external tools that support the IMS Basic Learning Tools Interoperability standard in your sites

Forums : Create, moderate, and manage discussion topics and groups within a course and send private messages to site participants

Gradebook : Calculate, store, and distribute grade information to students

Home Site : Your individual workspace displays our Message of the Day, campus resources, and your course notifications

Lessons : Create content modules and sequences; can be organized by week, unit, or topic; add student checklists

Messages : For contacting course members through internal messages and email

News : Display custom news content from dynamic, online sources via rss

Overview : For providing an overview of your site, description, recent announcements and events

Permissions & Roles : Permissions allow users to access certain features in sites depending on their roles

Podcasts : For managing individual podcast and feed information

PostEm : For distributing individual feedback via a .csv and confirming when each person has accessed it

Profile : Create a profile and connect with others in a social networking model

Resources : Post, store, and organize material related to the site

Rich Text Editor : A WYSIWYG editor to modify and format your text

Roster : View a list of site participants and their group membership

Rubrics : For creating and managing grading rubrics for use in the Gradebook and in individual assessment tools

Search : For searching site content

Section Info : For managing sections within a site

Sign-up : Enables signup for meetings, office hours, and other events

Site Info : For managing your site, adding/removing tools and site members

Statistics : View site usage statistics on user visits, tool activity, resource activity

Syllabus : Post a summary outline of course requirements

Tests & Quizzes : Create and manage online assessments

Web Content : Display external web pages and link to content in Resources

Wiki : Create and edit web content collaboratively

UNC Contrib Tools

Attendance : For keeping track of student attendance; can be linked to Gradebook

Course Reserves : For accessing physical/print and electronic UNC Library materials related to courses

Gradescope : Administer and grade online or digitized paper-based homework, quizzes, and exams

i>clicker : Sakai plugin for i>clicker products

Library Guide : For accessing course-specific UNC Libraries resources recommended by librarians

Panopto : For uploading and sharing videos on ITS's Panopto@UNC platform

SCORM Player : For playing SCORM content; can be linked to Gradebook

UNC Learning Center : Connect students to academic support resources at the UNC Learning Center

UNC Writing Center : Connect students to Writing Center services and resources

VoiceThread : For sharing slides, images, and videos and having group conversations around media

Zoom : A video web conferencing system that allows groups to meet, present, and collaborate
